Are you someone who longs for vast open spaces, small communities and immediate access to nature?

You might want to consider teaching in a rural or remote community in British Columbia. Schools in these areas need teachers who want to balance meaningful work with a slower pace of life, who want to plant roots and build a life in regions that tend to be more affordable.

And not only do rural and remote districts offer a peaceful lifestyle, but they can also come with significant financial perks, including a moving allowance, retention bonuses, and even student loan forgiveness options of up to $30,000.

To be eligible for these benefits, you generally need to teach in one of the approved rural or remote districts listed below and meet any criteria set by the district or the Ministry of Education.

Know Your Students. Know Your Neighbours. Know You're Making a Difference.

In smaller communities, teachers often get to know their students well over the years. Over time, teachers learn not just about their students' academic strengths but also about their hobbies and families. You might find yourself checking in with a student who seemed quiet during morning attendance or running into students and their families at the local grocery store after school. These daily moments help build strong relationships that go beyond the classroom.

"I know every high school student at the school. I can tell when any of them are having a bad day or are otherwise acting differently. And I am not unique among the teachers here. There's a wonderful feeling knowing that so many well-intentioned and supportive adults are so well-connected to the students at the school."Ìý

– Nisga'a teacher Nick Teramura

For many teachers, feeling connected is one of the best parts of teaching in a rural area.

Many rural communities give you easy access to some of Canada's best outdoor activities. Whether you like mountain biking, boating, skiing, hiking, paddling, watching wildlife or just having more space, rural B.C. offers a great quality of life.

Career Growth and Opportunities

Rural and remote school districts have great opportunities for both new and experienced teachers.

Teachers benefit from leadership opportunities earlier in their careers, diverse teaching experiences, smaller school environments and meaningful engagement with First Nations communities and cultures.

Since many districts are hiring, teachers can advance in their careers faster than in larger cities.

Our School Communities: Learning with Heart

SD84 schools serve vibrant coastal communities where education is deeply connected to place, people, and culture. With approximately 50% of the student population being First Nations, cultural understanding and land-based learning are core values.
