The Canadian government could cover student loans up to $30,000 for teachers working in rural communities.

Communities that qualify have a population of fewer than 30,000 people and struggle to attract and retain essential workers, such as teachers, doctors and nurses.

There are more than 80 cities in B.C. with smaller populations, including northern towns like Terrace and Fort St. John, island communities like Powell River and Tofino, and charming Interior towns, such as Osoyoos and Okanagan Falls, as well as Lower Mainland areas like Hope and Ladner.

Some of these areas may or may not qualify, so it is worth starting the process to see whether the community you're in or considering does. Those working or planning to work in more remote Northern B.C. districts, such as Nisga'a, Nechako Lakes and Coast Mountains, would very likely qualify.

What is this program about?

This initiative is part of Canada's ongoing efforts to address the rural-teacher shortage, a challenge shared by provinces nationwide. By expanding eligibility for teachers this year, the federal government builds on earlier provincial incentives designed to encourage educators to take on rewarding roles in smaller communities.

Here is how the program works:

  • Eligible communities are rural areas or population centres with a population of 30,000 people or fewer.
  • Teachers who meet the requirements can receive up to $30,000 in federal student loan forgiveness over five years.

Each year you teach in an eligible community marks a new milestone in student loan forgiveness.

In Year 1, you celebrate $4,000 of your loan being forgiven. As you continue, the amount grows. By Year 2, the amount increases, and by Year 5, you can reach up to $8,000 in forgiveness for that year.

These yearly benchmarks can help keep you motivated and remind you of the progress you are making toward reducing your student debt.

Why is this important?

For many teachers, especially those just starting, student loans can be a heavy burden. This program helps reduce that stress and encourages skilled educators to work in smaller rural communities across Canada.

In British Columbia, this includes teaching jobs in towns and regions with smaller populations, where quality education can make a big difference in the community.

Who is eligible to apply?

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are a certified teacher working in a rural or small community with 30,000 people or fewer.
  • Have a Canada Student Loan that you are currently repaying or are in the six-month non-repayment period.
  • Complete 10 consecutive months of teaching or at least 400 hours of in-person service in a school.
  • Have a federal student loan in good standing.

Yes, you can become a teacher without an undergraduate degree in education.

Are you contemplating a鈥痗areer change? Are you looking for a fresh challenge and want a meaningful future, making a difference in the lives of your community? Do you want to work in a field that offers a solid pension, exceptional benefits, and the ability to share your passion? 听

It's never too late to switch to a career in education. The good news is that if you have a bachelor's degree 鈥 even if it's not in education 鈥 you can still become a teacher in just one year. 听

What is the Path to Becoming a Teacher in BC?听听

Students have two options in BC:

  • Pursue a concurrent or dual degree program where they work towards receiving their undergraduate and Bachelor of Education at the same time.
  • Receive their undergraduate degree and then go for a Bachelor of Education post-degree program. The current programs vary in length from 11 months to two years.

Even with a non-teaching bachelor's degree, you can still apply for an to pursue a BCEd.听

But, if individuals want to become certified teachers, they require a Bachelor of Education (BCEd) and an undergraduate degree. The undergraduate degree can be in any discipline, but all programs require courses depending on the pathway (elementary, middle or high school) and the teachable specializations.听

Elementary school teachers are generalists, so a broad education in multiple subject areas is ideal. Middle school teachers can choose a general or specialized area of study, while high school teachers are specialists, so they would complete a major or minor in one or two teachable subjects.听听

While many different degrees can lead to an elementary school teaching career, the most direct route is a鈥疊achelor's in Elementary Education Degree.

Teacher Certification鈥听听

Once your training is complete, you can apply for certificate of qualification from the to teach in BC.听听听

  • You can apply for certification to teach in BC.听听
  • You must also be eligible to apply for certification to teach in other provinces and countries; each province and country has its certification requirements.听听

It can take several weeks for domestic educators to get certified to teach, and even longer for international teachers, so be sure to apply for BC teaching certification as soon as possible.听听

What degree do you need to be a teacher?听听

As noted, having a non-education bachelor's degree will not prevent you from becoming a teacher. In some rare and exceptional cases, schools will hire those without a teaching degree or on the path to receiving it. 听

In very exceptional cases, districts have advertised for "uncertified" teachers and in those cases, they could work without a teaching certificate. These jobs are always temporary, but they do provide candidates exposure in the classroom.听

Eligibility requirements鈥痶o teach in BC include听听听
  • A bachelor's degree from a recognized institution听听
  • Relevant academic preparation听听
  • Volunteer or work experience with children or youth听听
  • Pass a criminal record background check听听

Note: As B.C. sets the four-year Bachelor of Education degree as the minimum education requirement for K-12 teachers, you likely won't find work as a teacher with an associate's degree, though you could still qualify for jobs in education, either as an education assistant, clerical staff, custodian, bus driver, IT professional or supervision aide.听听听

Is it possible to teach without an education degree?听听

In some circumstances, applicants who have not completed all the academic and teacher education requirements may be issued a鈥疌onditional Certificate of Qualification.听听

This is a temporary certificate that is valid for up to 60 months. Applicants who are issued this certificate must鈥痗omplete any remaining academic and teacher education requirements within 60 months.鈥听

Applicants must meet the acceptable teacher education program requirements above to be eligible for a Conditional Certificate of Qualification. They must also have at least 24 credits of professional education coursework, including studies in:听听

  • Curriculum and instruction within their teaching area听听
  • Assessment and reporting听听听

Can I teach in an independent school in BC without an education degree?听听

You may be able to teach in BC's independent school system with an Independent Teaching Certificate.听听

A final word of advice on how to get a teaching certificate if you already have a bachelor's degree.听听

While it can feel daunting to start over after four years spent studying one very specialized field, a career in teaching is incredibly rewarding.听听

If you love working with young people and feel accomplished when helping students grow, then a career in education might be worth exploring.听听

British Columbia has a high demand for teachers in many areas of the province, especially in rural areas and Northern B.C.鈥疶he demand is expected to increase for the next 10 years.鈥听

Why the demand for teachers in Canada is high鈥听听
  • Teacher retirements.听听
  • Growing student population.听听
  • Fewer teacher graduates.听听听
What types of teachers are in demand in BC听听
  • There is a growing demand for French Immersion and Francophone program teachers.鈥听
  • Secondary Teachers specializing in advanced math, physics, chemistry, French and French immersion are in high demand.鈥听
  • Business, technology and home economics teachers also have good job prospects.鈥听

Every year, BC employers recruit hundreds of out-of-province Canadian teachers to our public school districts and independent schools. BC schools continue to actively recruit, and we expect the demand for teachers will continue in the foreseeable future.

As a part of my job at 海角乱伦社区, I travel cross-country and internationally to represent BC school districts and independent schools at career fairs every year. Through my travels, I have spoken to over a thousand teachers, and these are the most frequently asked questions I get asked.

"Does BC need teachers?"

Yes! Over the next ten years, the BC's estimates that there will be roughly 1,600 jobs available in education annually. In that same period, the labour market report estimates that there will be 10,000 elementary teaching jobs and 6,500 secondary school teaching opportunities.

As a province, our schools are always looking for great teachers in all grade levels and subject areas to join our learning communities. If you would like more insight into the specific demands of BC regions or employers, contact us.

"Can I apply for a continuing position without being a supply or teacher-on-call first?

In BC, there is no requirement to work as a supply/substitute/on-call teacher before you can become a full-time or continuing contract teacher. You can apply for continuing contracts as soon as you become certified!

One thing to note is that some public school districts will not post continuing contract positions on Makeafuture.ca until they have considered all internal candidates. They will only post on-call teaching positions because their collective agreements requires them to make these opportunities available to existing employees first. Each district also has its own collective agreement provisions around hiring.

If you're interested in the intricacies of each public school district's hiring obligations, you can learn more by reading their听.

"Should I wait until I have all my documents before applying for a BC teaching certificate?"

There is a set of documents that you need in your BC teaching certificate application. For example, you need your teacher practicum reports, post-secondary transcripts, and character references to name a few. All documents must be received by the Teachers Regulation Branch before a complete evaluation can be completed. The long processing time can be frustrating, but if you are able to submit all your documentation promptly, it will drastically improve the length of processing your application.

"If I'm from another province, do I have to take more courses to become a BC teacher?"

The allows "teachers certified in other provinces to be recognized as qualified for teaching by all other provinces and territories without having to complete additional studies or exams." That likely means no extra years of university or exams for Canadian-certified teachers looking to work in BC as long as they are in good standing with their own province's certifying body.

"Do BC schools interview out-of-province candidates? Do I have to travel to BC for an interview?"

BC schools aren't expecting you to hop on a TransCanada flight for an interview. Our schools are modern and innovative–many offer to interview via Skype, Zoom or phone.

"Can I port my teacher's pension to BC?"

Yes, you can apply to port your teacher's pension to BC if you have an existing pension plan from another province. You will need to submit a form online and provide听government-issued identification to prove your age and identity.

"Does my seniority听earned in my home province transfer over to British Columbia?"

Most school districts in BC will recognize your years of experience as a teacher but, will not directly transfer over your seniority to BC from another province.

Moving to another province can be overwhelming. If you're thinking about making a move but have a few questions, feel free to email us. We are always happy to help!

How is the process of getting a teaching job in British Columbia different from Ontario?

There are some key differences between teaching in Ontario and British Columbia. If you're an Ontario teacher or a Canadian teacher trained outside of BC, here are some important things to know about the job application and teacher certification process.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about teaching in bc

Q: Is supply teaching the same as teaching on call?

A: Yes, supply teaching is similar to teaching on-call in British Columbia. Instead of the term supply teachers, BC school districts use the term "teacher teaching on-call" or TTOC. One difference is that school districts do not have to maintain two separate occasional teachers' lists, i.e. "roster" or "LTO."

Q: Do I apply for jobs with the school board?

School districts hold the responsibility of hiring teachers in the public school system, and they often use the terms "school board" or "board of education" interchangeably. Nonetheless, a school board or board of education comprises a group of school trustees who develop plans, policies, and budgets that govern the school. Generally, boards of education do not have direct involvement in the hiring of teachers, although certain individual school trustees may participate in certain stages of the process in specific school districts. Teaching jobs are posted throughout the year on .

Q: Do I have to take additional courses to get my BC teaching certificate?

A: No, if you are certified in Ontario and in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT), you do not need to take additional coursework to obtain your BC teaching certificate. According to the Teacher Regulation Branch, "If you hold a current, valid, unrestricted teaching certificate from another Canadian province or territory, you will likely qualify for a Professional Certificate under the Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA), even if you do not meet our currency requirements."

Q: Can I transfer my pension to the BC teachers' pension plan?

A: Yes, under an , you can transfer your Ontario Teacher's pension to the BC Teachers' Pension Plan.

Q: I have completed Additional Qualifications/Additional Basic Qualifications (AQ/ABQs) in these areas; what can I teach in BC?

A: Although your BC teaching certificate does not impose any restrictions on the subjects or grade levels/divisions that you can teach, it is important to keep in mind that school districts have their own set of standards for qualifications when hiring teachers for various roles. As such, while teachers are free to apply for any position, they must meet the specific requirements of the school district for which they are applying.

Q: What are BC class size limits?

A: In this between the BC Public School Employers' Association, the BC Ministry of Education and the BC Teachers' Federation,听 the following class size and composition were set:

  1. Kindergarten classes shall not exceed 20 students;
  2. Grade 1 classes shall not exceed 22 students;
  3. Grade 2 classes shall not exceed 22 students;
  4. Grade 3/4 classes shall not exceed 24 students;

In multi-grade classrooms, the class size maximum for the lower grade shall apply. For example, in a K/1 split, the class size maximum is 20 students. Depending on class composition, grade levels, and school districts, these numbers may vary. For more details on this topic, read the .

Q: Does my seniority transfer/port over to BC?

A: In BC, teachers teaching-on-call (TTOCs) and those on temporary and continuing assignments accrue experience. The local collective agreement of each district determines how to apply, accrue, and recognize seniority. Teachers can only transfer their seniority when they obtain a continuing assignment with a district. They can earn up to 20 years' seniority credits within a school district and transfer them to another school district. Learn more about the process in the seniority section of the .

Q: Can I transfer my Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan to BC?

A: Initially, consider whether you anticipate the move to be permanent. If your answer is affirmative, there are transfer agreements in place with teachers' plans in other provinces. Typically, teachers in this situation are able to transfer their accumulated credit to their new employer's plan.

If you anticipate returning to Ontario and continuing your teaching career here, it may be advisable to keep your accumulated credit in the plan. Upon your return, you can explore the option of transferring any credit you earned while away into the plan.

Q: Do my additional qualifications (AQs) affect my salary grid placement?

A: The Teacher Qualification Service places teachers on their salary grid based on their qualifications.听The provides a comprehensive explanation of how your Additional Qualifications (AQs) can influence your salary.

Q: What is the minimum duration of employment required as a supply teacher on the long-term occasional list before applying for a permanent position?

British Columbia's public school districts do not have policies similar to Ontario's Regulation 274, which outlines the hiring process for long-term occasional (LTO) and new permanent teaching positions. Instead, each school district's collective agreement has its own set of guidelines for the hiring process. LTO/on-call teachers do not have to fulfill a specific number of assignments within a designated timeframe to qualify for consideration for permanent positions.
