Kootenay

Regional Overview

The Kootenay region (or "The Kootenays" to locals), nestled in the southeastern portion of the province, is home to seven school district employers. The area is filled with mountains and lakes, which offer spectacular scenery and endless outdoor adventure. Mining, agriculture and forestry are prime industries in the region.

Kootenay school districts serve students in Castlegar, Trail, Grand Forks, Rossland, Nakusp and more. The largest school district is Southeast Kootenay School District, followed by Kootenay Lake, Kootenay Columbia, Rocky Mountain, Boundary and Arrow Lakes school districts.

Culture

Shaped by a rich history of mining, railways and pioneers, the Kootenays offer a unique blend of heritage and discovery. Echoes of the past can still be found throughout the region, where hikers may stumble upon the remnants of old mining operations, weathered cabins, or even sunken paddlewheelers along remote shorelines.
The region has deep roots in natural resource industries. Mining, forestry and agriculture continue to play a significant role, alongside growing sectors such as tourism, renewable energy and small business entrepreneurship. This mix contributes to stable, diverse communities with a strong local identity.

Lifestyle

With its snow-capped peaks in winter and idyllic lakeside summers, the Kootenay region attracts those who love being outdoors. People in the Kootenays like to live a little quieter, and residents are known for their laid-back attitude.

Much of this region is still undiscovered country, and residents spend their weekends canoeing, kayaking, hiking and skiing. For those looking to explore outside of the province, Alberta is just a short drive away.

Community

Every town in the Kootenays has its own personality, but people across the region value working together, protecting the environment, and enjoying a good quality of life. Events like farmers’ markets, arts festivals and volunteer projects bring people together year-round.
For teachers, joining a community in the Kootenays means being part of more than just a job. Schools are at the heart of local life, and teachers often help shape the community by leading activities, working with local groups, or building strong connections to students and their families.
